Early Career Investigators: CALERIE Scholars:

Scholars received travel funds to attend the CALERIE Workshop April 16-17, 2023 in Scottsdale, Arizona.

This Workshop provided opportunities for Scholars to receive mentoring from senior investigators, to learn about pilot funding opportunities, and to learn about the application process for requesting use of CALERIE trial data and biological samples. Scholars are listed below.

The overall CALERIE Research Network goal is to generate interest in CALERIE-based ancillary studies by demonstrating the wealth and accessibility of CALERIE data and samples.  The agenda was designed around developing Working Group plans with a goal of creating funding proposals for Workshop participants: working singly or in groups, for Network pilot funding, or going for the R01-level grant.

Working Group Topics:

• miRNA, epigenetics, and DNA Methylation
• Circadian Rhythm
• Behavioral interventions
• Metabolomics

Areas of Future Interest:

• Long-term follow-up studies
• Developing interactions with other intervention study biorepositories that can help us validate molecular findings discovered in CALERIE and the converse
• Studies involving cross-species studies of the same CALERIE-related questions in both human and animal studies

The CALERIE trial employed intensive behavioral strategies to enhance CR adherence. The Computerized Tracking System (CTS) adherence strategies and data set was established to track adherence to CR and to guide individualized counseling sessions in the form of toolbox options. These features make the CALERIE data sets a valuable research resource for investigating various hypotheses about the behavioral aspects of sustained CR intervention.  Dr. Corby Martin led the webinar and provided information relevant to the NIA funding opportunities.
